Your Questions Answered
1 / What is therapy, and how does it work?
Therapy is a safe and supportive space where you can talk openly about whatever is on your mind without fear of judgment. Your therapist is an unbiased, compassionate listener who’s there to help you navigate life’s challenges. If you’re working through a mental health diagnosis, therapy also offers practical tools and strategies to help you manage symptoms and improve your well-being. Using evidence-based approaches, therapy is designed to reduce distressing symptoms over time, helping you feel more balanced, empowered, and resilient.
2/ What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major insurance plans, including but not limited to Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UMR, UnitedHealthcare, Medicaid, and Medicare. Coverage can vary depending on your clinician, but if there’s ever an issue with your insurance, we’re committed to working with you to find a solution that meets your needs.
3/ What are your out-of-pocket fees for therapy services?
Out-of-pocket fees for therapy services can vary depending on the clinician. Some therapists offer a sliding scale based on your income and family size, while others may have a set flat fee. Fees can range from as low as $5 up to $150. However, we never want financial concerns to prevent you from getting the support you need. If cost feels like a barrier, please reach out — we’re committed to working with you to find a solution that makes therapy accessible.
4/ What does that first appointment look like?
Your first appointment is an opportunity to get a feel for your therapist and see if they’re the right fit for you. Think of it as an interview—but you’re the one in charge. You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable, and your therapist may ask some questions to better understand your needs, such as your support system, work, or what’s bringing you to therapy. Before your appointment, you’ll receive access to our secure client portal, where you can complete all necessary paperwork, including intake forms, insurance details (if applicable), and payment methods. This process is simple and can even be done from your phone.
5/ How does teletherapy work?
Teletherapy is conducted through our secure client portal. About 24 hours before your scheduled session, you’ll receive an email with a link to join — no apps or downloads required. Simply click the link, and you’ll be connected to your therapist in a HIPAA compliant video chat. If you misplace the email, you can always access the session link directly through your portal as well. Teletherapy is designed to provide the same quality care as in-person sessions, just with added convenience. Research shows it’s just as effective as in-person care, and we’re here to ensure it feels just as meaningful.
6/ Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is completely confidential, and your privacy is protected under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) laws. This means that everything you share with your therapist stays private unless there are specific legal or safety concerns that require disclosure, such as risk of harm to yourself or others. Your therapist is committed to maintaining your confidentiality and creating a safe space where you can speak openly and honestly.
7/ Are your therapists experienced in working with LGBTQ+ clients and other diverse populations?
Our therapists are experienced in working with LGBTQ+ clients as well as individuals from diverse cultural, racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. We understand that identity, culture, and lived experiences play a vital role in mental health, and we are committed to creating a space where you feel seen, respected, and supported. Our clinicians are affirming, knowledgeable, and sensitive to the unique challenges that marginalized communities may face. Whether you’re exploring identity, processing discrimination, or simply seeking a therapist who understands your experience, we are here to provide compassionate and inclusive care.
8/ Can I switch therapists if I don’t feel like it’s the right fit?
Absolutely. Finding the right therapist is key to a successful therapy experience, and we understand that not every match will be the right one. If you ever feel like your current therapist isn’t the best fit, you’re welcome to switch to another clinician. Our priority is making sure you feel comfortable, heard, and supported. Just let us know, and we’ll help connect you with someone who better aligns with your needs.
9/ How long does therapy take, and how often will I go?
The length and frequency of therapy depend on your unique needs, goals, and progress. Some people find short-term therapy helpful for a specific challenge, while others benefit from ongoing support. Sessions are typically held weekly or biweekly, but this can be adjusted based on what works best for you. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan that fits your situation and evolves as your needs change.
